First of all, I believe we all have a basic instinct or human nature. Our inate nature would be our personality, the things that appeal to us and things we don’t like. Our individuality is caused by our nature. I think that when you are born you are born an indivdual, different from the baby being born in the next hospital room. How we are raised makes us less of an individual because we, most of the time, follow in the footsteps of those who raise us.

I think that nurture is much more powerful than nature. We all know right from wrong, we all have our own set of morals and values. How much we care about those morals and values depends on our nature and our nurture both. In the novel there are plenty of examples to why nurture has an effect on the rest of your life. Most obvious of these examples being Dick and Perry’s childhood. Perry grew up in an unstable environment; his mother was an alcoholic who never took care of her children. Perry never really had any money. He grew up in different orphanages where he was beaten and made fun of for his bed-wetting problem. Now, this is no excuse for the terrifying acts he commited against the Clutter family. This just explains why he would have lots of built up anger and resentment. Another example to how effective nurture is compared to nature is Nancy and Kenyon’s childhood. The Clutters are a very respectable family with a very strong value for their morals. They are involved in their church and in 4-H. They have plenty of hard earned money which they spend wisely. Now, I would say it is mostly because of Nancy and Kenyon’s positive environment that they are such good kids. They make good grades and help anyone they can help. They have great attitudes and a very positive outlook on life. They are very loved throughout their community just as their parents. As you can see, I believe that nurture plays a very important part on the reamainder of our lives after childhood.

When Capote describes Holcomb he doesn’t just delineate the setting of the story he portrays a certain mood. You can feel the quietness and desolation of Holcomb. You can taste the dryness and feel the dust on your skin. Holcomb seems completely different from Carteret County. Holcomb has very vast fields and farms. Carteret County has more neiborhoods than farms or feilds, in fact there are very few farms at all in Carteret County. Everyone in Holcomb is very close to one another; it’s like one big family. In Carteret County we all have realatoinships similar to that, but scince there are more people in Carteret County the realatoinships are more spread out. We don’t all know each other like they do in Holcomb.

The way Capote describes the Jail in part four makes the jail seem very relaxed. When I think of a jail I think of a very solemn, sad place. The Jail presented in the story seems very nice, which was very unexpected considering the horrible acts Dick and Perry had commited. Mrs. Meir leaves magazines for Perry and prepares his favorite food for him. This scene when the jail is first introduced is very suspenseful in a way. You don’t know what to expect; you wonder how people are going to treat Dick and Perry or if they will try and escape.

The Settings, the way Capote portrays them play a very important role in the development of the story. It is because of the setting, you feel a part of the story; like you’ve seen it all before.

I have only read one other book that used montage. This technique is very new and interesting to me. The unique style creates a very alluring novel. In my opinion, it gives guidance in engaging its readers, you get to listen to each character’s own voice. Hearing and seeing their story through their own eyes constantly keeps you debating and contradicting the different feelings you have for each of the characters. When Perry is explaining his depressing childhood you develop sympathy for him, but you listen to Perry later on explain how he killed the Clutters and how they had to pay for all those who wronged him. This event causes the sympathy you once had to quickly diminish .

Sometimes when I read I find myself becoming bored with the same character or characters. It is awfully suspenseful when you are reading and you glance at the next page and see that you are going to soon be hearing a new story, and it is even more suspenseful when you see that the story that you are reading is coming to a close but not an end. For example, the last thing you read in one of the sections is when Mrs. Ashida tells Mr. Clutter that she couldn’t imagine him being afraid. You know what is coming and you are hoping that maybe the story will change and the Clutters won’t die; so you quickly hurry to the next section to learn their fate. Even though you can easily predict the outcome of the story, montage keeps you wondering and guessing. At the beginning Capote introduces the Clutters as they were before their horrifying murders. By doing this you get to know the Clutters very well and they become your “friends”. As you read and discover that they are killed emotion is triggered inside of you. You use this emotion to aid you in connecting with the story. You know that the Clutters are murdered; however there always seems to be hope that they won’t be, and you know that the killers are caught but the suspense still is strong and you doubt their capture. The reader is very active throughout the novel, which makes it exciting. You don’t just hold the book up and examine the words with your eyes. You become a part of the story, you emerge as a resident of Holcomb and you travel with Dick and Perry. You are one of Nancy and Kenyon’s friends and one of Mr. Clutter’s employees. You are there but you are there without a voice. You want so badly to save the Clutters or help Dewey capture the hated murderers, but the pages bind you and separate you from the story and so you are useless.
